    blogging the sphere

Or should that be spearing the blog? Blogger tells me it is on a scheduled outage, so no telling when this will post. (!) I’ve been editing a fascinating book by one of our new authors, about the discovery and passage of the Anza Trail. Her photos are gorgeous — a look at an old historical venture through the photographer’s eye, 21st century. It is good reading but lots of details to watch for (like checking the Spanish translations) so it has taken me longer than I expected. That’s work. The elections are also causing a flurry at the newspaper, because of covering issues before Erection Day and giving fair…

about Pebble Beach, a bit late

We spent Labor Day weekend at Pebble Beach in a McMansion, or maybe it is just a plain old mansion, I don’t know, not having that much experience with mansions of any sort. I’d like to say it was a bit of a test of my ability to relax and enjoy myself and try to keep my Compact (environmental and frugal) ideals intact. I wonder if any of y’all have had this experience — where you’re so busy looking at the waste/energy usage/and whatever is the opposite of green and frugal that you can’t enjoy whatever it is? It feels very Puritanical in spirit to me…trying to “judge not” and…

    coupla pix before bed

I am falling asleep on East Coast time still. But a few quick pix: (L)Mia before the graduation (waiting at Madison Sq Garden/Penn Station) (notice the bag I made her), then (R) Mia waving her diploma after leaving the stage, at the 42nd St theatre where Phantom of the Opera plays every day and night. (L)Mia in front of her fabu school. Do you love her hat or what? Here is Ma and Pa Tracey in front of the U-No-What…notice and appreciate my $16 dollar-store outfit — which became necessary when my beat-up Uggs and jeans and sweaters were suddenly not appropriate for a graduation in 80-degree heat. And here…

    wait — one more!

ABOVE: Erik Kos, fabulous self with hot-pink do-rag (go Jets!), Carrie Beavers, Max Tubbs (go Pilots!), Mr Husband (aka Patrick Tracey), Linda Tubbs and Peter Beavers (go, Alameda!). Hometown pride in action…We’re near the Bladium and the other hangars, in front of the Seaplane Lagoon. Here’s a shot that friend Michael Shiess, of Lucky JuJu Pinball Gallery and the Neptune Beach Amusement Museum , who was driving past, stopped and took. He also generously offered his Dumpsters for us to dump in (alas, they were already full). Thanks, Michael! (Michael is also the guy who found the very old Jane Austen book in his house that I wrote about last…

    poppies will make them sleep

…sleep…now they’ll sleep… Saw these poppies at Alameda Point and thought how lucky we are to live in California. Yeah, I know, lots of things about it stink, but in terms of gratitude for what we have, right here in our midst, I’m grateful to have decent weather most of the year, open space, a lively arts community, schools close enough to walk or ride bikes to, access to good food and clean water, and as much chocolate as one person can eat, pretty much whenever. Ditto that, fair trade coffee. Ditto that, decent vino. When we were little kids we believed that you couldn’t pick a California poppy —…
