Veggie tales, and a garden
The vegetable situation is grim here. We have extra people for dinner tonight and need to stretch what we have to feed everyone. Since the weather is so warm, we decided to cook out on the grill, and use up the rest of the Father’s Day barbecue meat — hot dogs and burger patties, plus a roasted vegetable medley — aka what’s left in the fridge. The vegetable medley consists of the last 4 potatoes, a really sad red onion (see photo — at least half was slimy or foul), a handful of wrinkled cherry tomatoes, two unripe green tomatoes off our own plants that got knocked off by a clumsy gardener…

a bushel and a peck
Trickling down to the end of the month, I thought I’d take a look at the pantry and fridge to see what we have left. The very first thing to say is that we are not starving. We are so much better off than many people. In general terms, I could whip up a soup, a simple pasta dish or some kind of omelet or casserole if need be. I also have lots of dried beans and other legumes, cereal and oatmeal to last another week at least, baking supplies, and enough condiments to smear Alameda with pickles, chutney and jam from Alameda Point to the Oakland Airport. These jars and…

not counting days
Last night I had my first food nightmare — I was trying to stir a pot with not enough beans and vegetables in it, and I remember adding some sliced green peppers and knowing it wouldn’t really help. There wasn’t enough, and no matter how much I kept stirring, it wasn’t enough. I awoke from this dream with a clenched feeling in my chest, an elevated heart rate and a feeling of doom. Ick. Not pleasant. I have anxiety dreams sometimes, but I can’t remember one about food, ever. Intriguing, because we’re not “really” on food stamps, we’re just playing a game. But the anxiety about not feeding the family was so…

Thursday thoughts, with a free rant included
Leftovers tonight, or cold cereal (for me). I mentioned today in another post elsewhere that I don’t like hamburgers. I don’t like ground beef. But I served the leftover BBQ burger patties the other night in gravy with mashed potatoes, and ate those leftovers today for lunch. It’s chilly today, seemed like a good day for a hot lunch — but blech. Having to eat leftover leftovers was low on the chart of my dining experiences. And now, today’s product endorsement…not!Want to save money? Don’t buy stuff. Like — anything from Procter and Gamble, Johnson and Johnson, Lever Brothers, etc. Especially if you are in reduced circumstances, you can save yourself…

me, bellyachin’
Beans, beans, beans. Beans, beans and more beans. I like beans. I love beans, in fact. But I can’t take any more beans this week. I’ve been eating 3-bean salad every day, twice a day, since Sunday, it seems, and to be blunt, I am in gastric distress, and I can’t eat anymore. As awesome as beans are as a protein and an inexpensive food, I’m done. I will just eat cereal and milk til that runs out, and then I’ll eat oatmeal without milk. No more beans for me. Interesting — until this moment, I hadn’t considered that there might be physical side effects from my food stamp budget.…
