moments in time
What have I done for you lately? Not much. I’ve found that I’m on full-whelm, which is a shade below overwhelm. And doing fine here, thank you. I didn’t know I could juggle this well. Or at all. Clearly, I am learning. What I did this week: 1. Didn’t receive hate mail from anyone. Did buy 1-cent stamps. Did send very small check to favorite political candidate. His name starts with an O and rhymes with Mama. 2. Made several school lunches that did not get eaten. Took one of those with me to work when daughter forgot/rejected it, only to have to give it to her at school because…

Hooligans Hit West End Home
This is a Backyard Bliss column that I couldn’t post on the other site. So here it is… They’re getting bolder. They don’t just come for the compost-buffet anymore. The one or two raccoons that live in my neighborhood have become a growing family of four or five young-uns and a couple adults. The pack has been visiting our backyard most nights for a while now, but they have begun to wear on my nerves. It’s not just my water garden that they mangled. Despite a chicken wire cover on the barrel, the hooligans have managed to grab every specimen of water plant and munch it to bits. The lily…

the end, and the beginning
I think, I think Measure H passed — by 105 votes? That’s the last I heard, and we posted it to the Web but our story for tomorrow still says losing by one vote. At least we didn’t say it had totally lost in big letters. That’s a plus-one for us this week. However, there is a distinct disadvantage to a weekly cycle, mainly, that life goes on no matter when your press run is. So there we are. Tonight our Mia comes in. Friday our Moni graduates. Our Ana got perfect attendance and a prize (tix to see the A’s) and a B average, which means she’s earned a…

hell’s kitchen
that’s where we are today — roasting on a spit, being basted with sweat. Ick. But actually I LOVE the heat. So I’m faux-complaining just to get the ball rolling here. Today was Bike to Work Day and I did so — I think it’s about 5 miles though I actually have to clock it tomorrow to make sure. Each way! In the heat! It was not hard going, since Alameda is so darn flat, but it wasn’t my good bike, since one daughter rode it and got a flat the other day. So I rode her bike, and it is too short, even for me. My booty is sore…

two steps forward
one baby step back…Mother, may I? Big fiesta at our place tomorrow — El Tres de Mayo, so come if you want to. Wear your huaraches and bring a Mexican dish to share (we have chips and salsa to feed a platoon, so skip those), and a tasty beverage of choice. BBQ will be going if you want to cook meat-like things. Firepit will be going if you want to get warm, in case it’s cold, which it will be. It always is out here in Scotland, I mean, Alameda Point. Fiesta is 3 pm to 10 pm and not a minute later. I need my beauty rest, and so…
