    When the Sky Fell

Rick and I are sleeping, a little late on a Tuesday. It’s deadline day, and we know there is a grueling schedule ahead – a stop to pick up proof pages and photos, last-minute stories to write, an unstable editor’s wrath to face, surely sometime before 4 p.m. when the last page is due at the press. The phone rings. We stretch and rise. Harold, down at Production, wants to know where the hell we are. “Wake up, man,” he shouts into the phone, Jamaican, the half-laugh in his voice enough to keep us guessing. Is he angry? Is he joking? We can never tell. “You are missing all the…

    back in the saddle again

Yes, well-ish enough to resume the writing. Hi, peoples, and glad to be back. It was gorgeously hot while I was ill, and now that I’m feeling healthy again, or on my way to it, the June Gloom of Northern California summer has arrived, so it’s blowing cold wind and fog outside. Brr. Just what the doctor didn’t order. Busy weeks, the next few — D#3 is heading for graduation and all its attendant activities. D#2 is almost finished with her semester at CoA and planning ahead for her heavy summer semester. D#4 is getting used to her new school and looking for a job, and getting ready to turn…

    ta-da!

It drives me crazy how I can’t get these to line up, but what do I expect from a free blog program? Grrr. But anyway — ta-da, here is Ana in the satin sheath from wedding dress number 1 and the cummerbund from dress number 2. (Click on each photo for a larger view.) Note the pretty red satin roses on the back of the cummerbund, and she chose flowered accessories for necklace and rings. She was going for glamour and drama, hence the red lipstick. She also has full length white opera gloves to wear, but she planned to wear them later. Or maybe not. It’s junior prom. Like,…

    Coolio

Barack is da bomb. How cool is he? Super cool. I couldn’t be happier. I’m sure not everyone feels this way. But as for me and my house, we will celebrate. I ate one of the persimmon muffins for breakfast. What did it taste like? Pumpkin, sort of. A fruity spice cake. It was good. It was fine. Yum. I’ve been bringing my lunch almost every day since the star of the new year. I was doing that before, but not on days we have trade-lunches at work. We used to have a trade for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We still have Tuesday and Thursday but I’m not eating…

    No rest for the weary

In other words, I worked today. I am taking a couple of hours off tomorrow a.m. to watch the ceremony on TV but otherwise, the news waits for no one. Or else they’d call it “olds.” Anyhoo, the weekend:The dried cilantro went all gross on me. So did the dill. It’s just not warm enough to dry herbs outside these days, and the air is too moist, I think. I could have used the dehydrator, but electricity and all that. I will try the ice cube trick or a baggie in the freezer method next time around. These three bunches of herbs ended up in the compost pile. I did…
