    Announcing Amaryllis, at long last

Ladies and Gentlemen! I am so excited to announce…the publication of my second book, Amarylis: Collected Poems, on March 11, and a cool way to help my dear friends at the Alameda Food Bank. We’re holding a book launch party and reading at a coffeehouse in Alameda, as a benefit for the Alameda Food Bank. Please bring at least one canned or nonperishable food item to donate to the food bank. There will also be three gift baskets (including a copy of the book) to raffle for the Food Bank. These are “Think Pink,” “Flower Power” and “Pamper Yourself” themes, for $1 per ticket/chance. I would love to see you…

    Bionic Boots-a-Go-Go

We’ve been repairing our items rather than just throwing them away for a while now, keeping them out of the waste stream and extending their still-useful life. Witnesseth: The Bionic Bird Feeder: Raccoons tore it down and stomped on it, so we repaired it with duct tape and a wire coat hanger to hang it up again. The Bionic Sun Tea Jar: Repaired with epoxy where it was cracked and leaked on the counter. Had a nice white and grimy streak around it where the dirty finger rubbed the epoxy. Not *my* dirty finger. The Bionic Slippers: My lovely black bedroom slippers with (formerly) white faux fur inside, and black…

    my boring life

Seems like all my posts have become a bulletin board for my to-do lists [YAWN], so how about something more interesting? [tap dancing across the desktop] Yeah, it’s my birthday month — my favorite month of the year, except for hot summer and Christmas. But February — woo hoo, my fave. Valentine’s Day, Austin’s birthday, violets are blooming, plum trees are trying to bloom their gorgeous magenta blossoms, then it’s an anniversary with Mr Husband from one of our earliest dates (our walk on the beach), and of our first romantic date, and when we got engaged, and also…yes. My birthday. And Mia’s birthday. And my sister-in-law Amanda’s birthday. Heck,…

Saving the planet, and my soul

OK, just kidding about the soul. I know just where it is, and it’s doing fine. But the planet…In other words, how I Compacted this weekend —- Picked up CSA box. Supporting local farmers, local produce stand, yeah! 100-mile diet, yeah! Vegetarianism, yeah! Made cat food in the Crockpot. Cats eat healthy product, yeah! Cooked pinto beans in another Crockpot (a broken one that I got from Freecycle — the crock handle is broken at the edge but it works just fine, no leaks, just hard to grab when it’s very hot).Beans for Monday’s dinner, and to take to work. Yeah! Boiled CSA potatoes for vegetarian daughter to eat. She…

    Coolio

Barack is da bomb. How cool is he? Super cool. I couldn’t be happier. I’m sure not everyone feels this way. But as for me and my house, we will celebrate. I ate one of the persimmon muffins for breakfast. What did it taste like? Pumpkin, sort of. A fruity spice cake. It was good. It was fine. Yum. I’ve been bringing my lunch almost every day since the star of the new year. I was doing that before, but not on days we have trade-lunches at work. We used to have a trade for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We still have Tuesday and Thursday but I’m not eating…
