    No rest for the weary

In other words, I worked today. I am taking a couple of hours off tomorrow a.m. to watch the ceremony on TV but otherwise, the news waits for no one. Or else they’d call it “olds.” Anyhoo, the weekend:The dried cilantro went all gross on me. So did the dill. It’s just not warm enough to dry herbs outside these days, and the air is too moist, I think. I could have used the dehydrator, but electricity and all that. I will try the ice cube trick or a baggie in the freezer method next time around. These three bunches of herbs ended up in the compost pile. I did…

    reposting an old post

This is from 2 weeks ago that didn’t post properly. Geez. We did a lot of baking yesterday. I had a bagful of persimmons (the Fuyu variety, which are firm and can be eaten like an apple) but they were starting to get softer. I also had some apples that were getting a bit wrinkly. Gone Dumpster diving, aka urban foraging, aka safari: that’s where I have found tons of furnishings, plants, garden supplies, etc. 4. Gone more than a day without shampooing my hair, plus using multiple products 5. Made cat food 6. Given used items as gifts, unless it was a genuine “antique.” 7. *Not* purchased school pictures, graduation announcements, gift wrap, or any of…

How I saved the planet yesterday

I made a new friend at the refillable ink cartridge store this afternoon. All these years I’ve been buying my Epson ink at Office Max and they’ve been telling me I can’t use generic brand or get them refilled. In a pithy word, nonsense! My new friend at the RICS sold me refilled cartridges for about a third less, and that means nothing goes to landfill — except the shrink wrap around the cartridge. I asked if I could have it w/o the plastic, and he said it’s necessary to keep the ink from drying out. He’s a local guy who runs a very green business. The store is very…
